How do service providers differ from each other?

In terms of the product they deliver there is little difference between providers in that they can offer you a minimum or maximum level of service (download/upload speed) depending on how much you are willing to pay.
There is so little difference because as you will be paying your provider for your bandwidth, they in turn have to pay their provider, such as BT, for the privilege of selling it to you.

What the internet service providers do to differentiate themselves from one another is tailor various packages aimed at appealing to as wide a customer base as possible.
To do this they offer a myriad of ways to entice the customer to choose them, such as agreeing to charge half price for the first three months of a contract, offering free laptops or games consoles with a contract and in some cases a hefty cash sum given as cashback with a contract.

A quick look at the Deal Finder here will give you an idea of just how wide and varied the incentives offered by internet service providers can be.

Do I have to enter into a lengthy contract to receive broadband?

No, you do not have to enter into a contract to receive broadband. Most internet service providers offer a "Pay As You Go" service now whereby you purchase a wireless USB Modem - Dongle - from your chosen provider, and just top it up in the same way as you would with a mobile phone pay as you go credit scheme.
As an option (and because they are new to the market) the pay as you go packages do tend to be fairly expensive in comparison, so if you intend to have your connection for some time, you would be well advised to opt for a 12, 18 or 24 month contract. Bear in mind that the longer the contract you enter into, the better and cheaper deal you will get.

Also worth keeping in mind is the fact that just because you are offered the latest games console or a shiny new laptop for entering into a contract, it doesn't necessarily follow that you are getting a great deal. These gifts and giveaways cost money and there will usually be a way that your internet service provider will claw it back from you over the life, or via the monthly cost of, the contract. Don't dismiss them out of hand, but be careful to compare just how much value these giveaways offer you.

Can I cancel a contract at any time?

A contract is what it says it is, and when you enter into it you are agreeing to remain within its terms for the whole duration. So, if you want to terminate a contract early, there will be a financial penalty that is usually anything up to the full amount of the total cost of the contract.

If however you feel that your internet service provider is not keeping to their end of the contract, you can approach them politely and explain that you have issues with the way they are delivering the service that you both agreed to. An amicable way around any situation of this type is normally very easy to find.
Sometimes a polite telephone call from you can result in you being offered an enhanced level of service to stay with the provider for the duraton of the contract.

Are there any major Do's & Don'ts that I should be aware of?

Do consider that you will in almost all cases have to set up payment via direct debit and insufficient funds in your account on each monthly payment day will mean you incur a financial penalty from your bank.
Do calculate the overall cost to you of the total length of the contract before agreeing to enter into it.
Do engage in some online research around your choice of internet service provider before joining them. (If you enter the name of your preferred provider into any search engine and scroll past the first few reults that appear on the page, you will find plenty of "chat" about them on various consumer sites and public forums - they are usually a good indication as to the current state of service being offered)
Do take good care of any equipment that your internet service providers supplies you with at the beginning of your contract. If you decide that you want out of the contract early, for whatever reason, and the equipment is damaged when you return it, you could well be presented with a hefty bill.

Don't let a salesperson tell you how much of a monthly bandwidth allowance you will need. Ask yourself what you want to use the internet for and do some research into how much bandwidth your choices will consume. The vast majority of home users who partake in general browsing and light music downloads will find that the lower option of 2Mb will more than suffice. If however you are seriously into gaming or watching film then you should consider a heftier package of up to 10Mb or even more.
Don't allow your contract to run on after its lifespan until you have checked whether there are better deals to be had from other internet service providers. If you do find a more attractive offer speak to your provider and you will usually find that they will at least match it in order to retain you as a customer.
Don't assume that because you have signed up for a 2, 8 or 10Mb package that this is how much you will be getting. Providers state that it is up to this amount &in many cases it usually falls quite short of the mark. Again, check what is being said publicly online in forum areas and make your judgement with the benefit of other peoples real experiences.
Don't - when setting up a wireless broadband connection - leave your network unsecured. If your network is not secured with an encrypted access key you are leaving yourself open to abuse, and possibly identity theft. Always secure your network, it is a very easy step by step process that you will be guided on by screen prompts when setting up.

Satellite TV or cable. Which one do I choose?

If you are a light viewer of TV and only watch a couple of programmes of interest throughout the week, or if you live in an area where you struggle with a satellite signal, then cable may be the best way for you to go because you can get a basic TV package for little cost.

On the other hand, if you enjoy extensive viewing and want to watch your programmes in HD with better picture quality then it will be satellite TV for you.

Who offers what?

SKY TV are the leading provider of satellite TV and they have a wide range of options that you can choose from depending on what type of programme you like to watch. They have a really clever choice feature where if you enjoy, for instance Nature Programmes, you can opt to have your package laden with all of the nature programmes. It's a good idea from SKY to sell to you in this way because unlike cable it puts the choice of what programmes you watch under your own control and ensures that you get maximum enjoyment from your choice. £16.50 per month gets you your choice of TV package with broadband internet access and a phone line with free UK landline calls thrown in at no extra cost and if you join them before the end of this month you also get a £50 Tesco Gift Card for free.

VIRGIN MEDIA is the leading provider of cable TV. The basic package of 45 channels is free if you take their phone line with free evening and weekend calls at £11 per month. Another popular package offered by Virgin Media is the "L" package with over 100 channels including SKY 1, 2 & 3, MTV and many more. It costs £5 per month for the first 3 months and then £10 a month after that when you take a Virgin Phone line for £11 a month.

Orange USB Broadband offers a very cool way to surf the net and collect your emails while on the move. With the USB "Dongle" available for free when you take out a contract for less than £10 per month. Their UK coverage is excellent and being around as a market leader for as long as they have, you are assured of getting quality service from them for your mobile phone or mobile broadband package. Also they offer online customers better deals than they offer in-store. At the moment they are offering a money off deal to online customers who take the N85 with 600 minutes unlimited texts and free evening and weekend calls. The whole package works out at less than £30 per month giving you a saving of around £5 per month for the whole life of the contract - very good! You can see more details below or go to Orange and own it today. It is highly recommended.
